Visual Elements for photo

The people in this picture are in plain, solid colored clothing. Since there are no crazy prints or patterns, the audience doesn't get distracted. This is a good thing because the people are protesting and striving for a common goal and that is where all the attention needs to be focused on. The picture being black and white is also an important aspect; the people and background are darker colors, so there is noticeable contrast against the white posters. This contrast draws attention to the posters, which gets the protesters message across to the viewer. The only poster that is completely visible and not cut off is the one that says "Make Love Not War." The photographer made a good choice for capturing that poster because it spreads hippie ideology, as well as protest the Vietnam War. That poster is also the only one that is held high up into the air, indicating that the protester is eager to spread his message. Another important part of the picture is the man burning his draft card. He is in the very front and his face is clear and visible. Along with the poster, he also draws attention. He rebelliously holds up the burning draft card, displaying it for the world to see because he is proud of his own actions.

  1. This analysis on point. The poster is clearly highlighted and represents the ideals of the protest simply. The man burning his draft card is also highlighted. This is a strong protest, considering that it was illegal and he let someone take a picture of him doing it. This displays the intense emotions that surrounded the protest and the Vietnam war, despite the relative calmness of the photograph.

  2. The analysis of the picture is amazingly detailed. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The one sign that we can see lets us know exactly what the protest was about and the ones we cant see leave us to wonder what all sentiments were expressed that day. Each person in the picture holds a specific significance to both the hippie movement and now in modern America.

  3. I really liked how you closed up on the picture of the man burning the draft card. it is such a profound picture and it holds so much meaning to it. It is very simple but it sends across its message very effectively. Not only does it show the protest to the war, but also it shows that hippie movement in action (as you said). Overall, I liked your presentation and how pithy your blog is.

  4. I like how you justify the image being in black and white. I would agree that it helps focus the audience on the central idea of the image and prevents them from getting lost in an array of colors. Another important aspect of this photo is the word "no" on the poster in the center of the image. Since the photo is in black and white but the words are shaded, they stand out in the center of the image. It is important to identify the main concept of the image through the protest banners and understand that this represents a significant piece of Anti-War Propaganda.

  5. Wow! I really like how you opened the post with "The people in this picture are in plain, solid colored clothing. Since there are no crazy prints or patterns, the audience doesn't get distracted." I usually associate the hippie movement with loud and boisteros patterns. Although the clothing in this picture does not automatically scream hippie, a closer look at the words and actions in the photograph is required to discover the underlying theme. In the third sentence include a comma before "and" due to independent clauses. Also try to replace "that" to clarify what you are referring to. In the fourth sentence replace "picture being black and white." In the fifth sentence "protestors" should be possessive. In the seventh sentence change "protest" to "protests." Ending is a bit sudden.
